Background of the Study
Accurate and consistent phonetic articulation is vital for effective news reporting, particularly in a linguistically diverse country like Nigeria. In Abuja, news anchors are expected to adhere to standardized pronunciation norms to ensure that information is conveyed clearly to a broad audience. This study investigates the phonetic consistency of news anchors by analyzing articulation patterns, intonation, and stress in broadcasts. Consistency in pronunciation contributes to credibility and trustworthiness in journalism (Ibrahim, 2023). The research examines whether anchors maintain uniformity in speech across different news segments and how factors such as regional dialect influence pronunciation. With the advent of modern broadcasting technologies, there is an opportunity to closely analyze speech patterns using acoustic analysis tools. The study also considers listener perceptions and how phonetic variations might impact audience understanding and trust. By comparing various news programs, this research aims to identify best practices for achieving phonetic consistency in Nigerian news reporting, ultimately contributing to higher standards in broadcast journalism (Ibrahim, 2023; Afolabi, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the critical role of phonetic consistency in news reporting, there is limited empirical research on how Nigerian news anchors articulate their messages in Abuja. Variations in pronunciation and accent may affect message clarity and public trust. Existing studies have largely focused on content and delivery style, neglecting detailed phonetic analysis. This gap hinders efforts to standardize speech in broadcast journalism and may lead to misunderstandings among a diverse audience. Addressing this issue is essential for improving the overall quality and credibility of Nigerian news broadcasts (Ibrahim, 2023; Afolabi, 2024).
